Implementing a UCC-128 label
UCC-128 (GS1-128) labels are a group of shipping labels designed to be applied to both pallet shipments and individual cartons. They contain lots of information about the shipment, such as order details, dimensions, packing type, carrier, destination, Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) and shipping method, to name a few. UCC-128 labels use application identifiers (AIs) to encode data. The AI defines a specific purpose for the data field after it. Some of these fields include a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), which has an AI of 01, and a Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC), with an AI of 00. A typical UCC-128 label looks like this:
For example, the United States Postal Service (USPS) requires an Intelligent Mail Package Barcode (IMpb) generated with Code 128 symbology to be included on all shipping labels. This is also known as a UCC/EAN Code GS1-128.
In addition to the USPS, a number of retailers require UCC-128 labels, often with very different components. Well, eFORMz can automatically generate UCC-128 labels and Minisoft maintains a library of UCC-128/MH10 labels that have been approved by many popular retail brands.
